Renewed knee problems: Kyereh has to leave Freiburg training camp

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh remains dogged by injury woes. The SC Freiburg ten-man leaves the training camp in Austria again due to renewed knee problems

In February 2023, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh last appeared in a competitive match for SC Freiburg (starter’s appearance in the 5-1 defeat to BVB). This was followed by the second cruciate ligament rupture of his career, a complicated rehabilitation process and a long period of suffering – which is still not over.

SC Freiburg announced on Wednesday morning that the 28-year-old has left the club’s training camp in Schruns. The reason: “After the increased strain, new problems have arisen in the injured knee,” the club announced.

The ten-man had not yet taken part in team training again and had not even been on the pitch in Austria. Most recently, he had worked individually in the hotel and on the bike

Operative intervention should bring clarity

What exactly happens next for Kyereh is still unclear. According to the club, a “surgical procedure” is planned to provide information on “how further treatment and load management can be continued in a targeted manner”.

His comeback under new Freiburg coach Julian Schuster after a one-and-a-half-year injury break has therefore been postponed indefinitely for the time being. Kyereh moved to Freiburg from FC St. Pauli for €4.5 million in the summer of 2022 and showed flashes of his talent with three goals in 18 competitive matches after initial back problems. Muscular problems and an infection then slowed him down – and shortly after the start of the second half of the season, he tore his cruciate ligament
