The deadline expired at 11:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, La Liga has decided: Dani Olmo no longer has a license and is therefore no longer eligible to play for FC Barcelona. The future of the ex-Leipzig player is open.
Dani Olmo joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig in the summer, but the economic constraints facing the traditional club meant that they had to fear that they would not even be able to field the attacking player. Due to Barca’s financial situation, the registration for La Liga already turned into a waiting game in the summer. It was only the surprising, transfer-free departure of Ilkay Gündogan to Manchester City and the serious injury of Andreas Christensen that enabled the Catalans to register Dani Omo in La Liga – until the end of the year.
Recently, Barcelona tried in vain to register the Spanish international for the rest of the season, exhausting the legal avenues in the process – without success. The Spanish league refused to allow Hansi Flick’s club to register the 26-year-old on New Year’s Day, the league announced. The reason for the decision is the financial problems of the Catalans. FC Barcelona did not present any alternative to fulfill the conditions for registration. A new license for Pau Victor was also rejected.
Bara is not considering a move
What happens now with Dani Olmo? It is possible that FC Barcelona will now try to get him registered during the transfer window that runs until the beginning of February. The attacking midfielder, who has played 11 LaLiga and four Champions League games for Barca, is under contract until June 2030.
Even if Dani Olmo would now be available on a free transfer, his agent Andy Bara is not considering a move, as he told Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Will Barca stop the negative trend?
Barcelona start the new year with three away games. In the Spanish Cup against UD Barbastro, in the Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Bilbao and in the league against FC Getafe on January 18, Flick will have to deal with the negative trend of two recent defeats at the end of 2024 and the associated loss of the La Liga title without Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.
