Regensburg’s Albers: “Disgusting against and with the ball”

Jahn Regensburg’s coach Mersad Selimbegovic was very satisfied despite the 0:1 test match defeat against FC Augsburg. Attacker Andreas Albers has no fears ahead of the game in Paderborn.

Selimbegovic watched an “intense game” against the Bundesliga side and was “very pleased with the attitude, how the boys fought their way in”. Against FCA last Thursday, the coach of the current second-placed team in the league had given time to several players who had not played as much recently. “All the players who were used were in a really good mood,” the 39-year-old praised on the club’s own website.

New signing Aygün Yildirim, who had been injured for five months, and David Otto, who had been out of action for weeks, were two players who could provide Selimbegovic with additional offensive options for Friday night’s top game (6.30pm) at third-placed Paderborn.

“The balance between short balls and our actual style of play, playing very quickly vertically to the top, is working better and better at the moment. “

Selimbegovic is in good spirits, also because he gained the insight against Augsburg “that we are further along in all aspects if we compare it to the test match in the last international break against Fürth.” Attacker Andreas Albers also sees it that way. In an interview on the Jahn website, he describes the progress made by Regensburg, who have only lost once so far: “We were always very nasty against the ball and difficult to play against.” Now, however, opponents also have to watch out when his team has the ball. “The balance between short balls and our actual style of play, playing very quickly vertically to the top, is working better and better at the moment. At the moment we’re not only nasty against the ball, but also with the ball.”

That sounds like a good prerequisite for taking something to Paderborn. The recent record since 2018 shows two wins each for the host club. A fact that the Regensburg side would certainly like to change.
