Not a satisfactory start to testing at Aragon: BMW newcomer Scott Redding finishes the first day only in 13th position, more than 1.3 seconds behind
The switch from the Ducati Panigale V4R to the BMW M1000RR was obviously easier for Scott Redding. On the first day of the final pre-season test at Aragon, Redding only finished 13th in the combined standings.
Redding was 1.340 seconds off the pace and slower than his two brand-mates from the Bonovo team. Loris Baz was the best BMW rider in seventh, with Eugene Laverty in tenth.
The adjustment to the BMW requires more time, according to Redding. “It is still a process that is not yet complete,” the Briton admits in an exclusive interview with ‘Motorsport-Total.com’. “It’s about finding out which direction we need to work in. Time is needed to do that. “
“You feel you have made a step. But then you come to another track and you feel like you’ve taken two steps back. Then you have to reorient yourself again. But that’s the way it is at the moment. It is not easy. We realise that,” explained Redding.
Redding is happy with the support from BMW. “They are working very hard to provide us with new parts to make the step we need to make. That takes time. We just keep working and try to make the best of the situation,” the 2021 World Championship bronze medallist described.
Compared to the Ducati, the BMW is different in many areas. The engine concept is different, because unlike the Ducati’s V-engine, the BMW has an in-line engine. In addition, a large number of other components are used.
“Everything is different. The engine, the electronics, the seating position, the brakes – there was nothing that felt similar. It was a big change for me. But now it feels normal,” explains the BMW newcomer.
When asked what the strengths and weaknesses of the BMW are compared to the Ducati, Redding cannot give a meaningful answer. “No, I couldn’t find that out yet. But it’s not fair to compare those things either,” Redding said. And what is his plan for the final day of testing on Tuesday? “I’m trying to find more grip. It would be good if we can do that,” Redding notes.
