While waiting for Thibaut Courtois to come back from vacation, Real Madrid is checking the commitment of Tottenham Hotspur and France captain Hugo Lloris.
With an expensive new stadium in construction, Tottenham might be tempted to sell
Back in December, Hugo Lloris signed a new contract which should keep him with The Spurs until 2022. The deal bumped his salary to over €100,000 per week, making him Tottenham’s top earner alongside Harry Kane. In the meantime, the 29-year-old became a World Cup champion with his native France. As of now, he’s considered to be one of the top goalkeepers in the world and as such is a target for Real Madrid.
Los Blancos have plenty of money to spend following their Champions League victory and the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo. Keylor Navas is one of the rare weak points in the squad and a position new coach Julen Lopetegui would like to address in this transfer window. Real Madrid’s protracted pursuit of David de Gea came to an end when he signed a new contract with Manchester United this summer. Real missed out on Roma’s Alisson as well, so Thibaut Courtois became the club’s No.1 target. The Belgian is on vacation until August 5. While waiting, Real Madrid have made an enquiry regarding the availability of Hugo Lloris.
The Frenchman would cost over €65 million, far more than Courtois, whose contract expires at the end of the 2018/19 season. Tottenham could use the money, as they are in the midst of building a new stadium, the cost of which has escalated to over €1 billion. Even though it seems unlikely they would opt to sell, an offer near the one Liverpool paid for Alisson could tempt The Spurs to make a profit in a time of need.
There are plenty of fish in the sea and Lloris is more error-prone than a world-class goalkeeper should be. Giving up your captain is not easy, but Harry Kane’s presence makes that statement mute, as he is England’s captain and a budding superstar. Therefore, cashing in on Hugo Lloris while he’s still in his prime might not be such a bad idea.
