After six cases of corona already caused the January training camp to fall through, Bayern opponents RB Salzburg are once again struggling with an outbreak.
The Corona wave continues to not stop at serial champion RB Salzburg and hits the sovereign league leader again with all its harshness. In January, Salzburg had to cancel their training camp due to six positive cases, and now, just two weeks before the second leg of the Champions League eighth final at FC Bayern, they have announced that “15 people from the team and the support team” have already been infected with the virus. The Salzburg team did not disclose who exactly they were. As things stand, however, the upcoming away game on Sunday against Linzer ASK should go ahead as scheduled.
“At the moment we are still ready to train and play. However, we now have to monitor the further development of the non-infected players very closely in coordination with our medical department and react if necessary,” said sport director Christoph Freund.
Some of the professional players are also suffering from mild symptoms. In accordance with official regulations, all those affected are currently in quarantine. Today’s training sessions have been cancelled and replaced by a home programme. The team and staff will be undergoing further tests in the next few days.
Salzburg reinforces hygiene and security measures
As a result, hygiene and security measures around the team will be further strengthened, no spectators will be allowed at training matches, in addition all public dates will now be cancelled or postponed. In the Bundesliga, Salzburg have long since secured their ticket to the champions’ group and, after two victories at the start of the spring, are leading the table with a commanding 51 points.
In the Champions League, Salzburg made their mark with a 1-1 draw against Bayern and kept everything open for the return match in Munich on 8 March. Until then, the city of Mozart hopes that the Corona situation in the club will have calmed down again. RB is already struggling with injuries.
