Quarter-final: Only one Bundesliga clash – Union welcome St. Pauli

Four second division teams are among the last eight teams in the DFB Cup, but in the draw on Sunday evening, Norbert Dickel drew only one Bundesliga clash

Union can continue to dream of winning the cup in their own city, the Berliners will have to deal with the most recently replaced leaders of the 2. league FC St. Pauli. The Kiez knocked out BVB, the Eisernen eliminated city rivals Hertha BSC at the Olympiastadion.

HSV against KSC: memories of a memorable 1 June

Hamburger SV gets to deal with a league rival. The Hanseatics have home rights against Karlsruher SC. And good memories of the Badeners. In the 2014/15 relegation, when HSV were still the Bundesliga dinosaur, the club from the Alster under coach Bruno Labbadia avoided relegation against Karlsruher – Marcelo Diaz sank a free kick in injury time on 1 June 2015 to make it 1-1, Nicolai Müller ended KSC’s dream of promotion in extra time with the 2-1 winner.

RB Leipzig, already cup finalists twice (2019: 0:3 against Bayern, 2021: 1:4 against Dortmund), were drawn an away trip to Hannover. The Saxons will have to be cautious, as the Lower Saxons recently knocked Bayern beaters Mönchengladbach out of the round of 16 with a smooth 3-0 win. “It’s a shame for our fans that the draw didn’t result in a home game. Hannover 96 showed in the last round against Gladbach what the team is capable of. But our goal and also aspiration is still to make it there and get into the semi-finals,” said RB coach Domenico Tedesco.

Only once in the Bundesliga: Bochum hosts Freiburg

The only Bundesliga duel is: VfL Bochum against SC Freiburg. The Bochum side narrowly won the first league encounter this season 2-1 on matchday 13, when SC led at the promoted club, but Polter and a goal from the halfway line by Pantovic turned the tables for coach Thomas Reis’s side

Quarter-final to be played at the beginning of March

The quarter-finals will be played on 1 and 2 March 2022, with the semi-finals taking place on 19 and 20 April 2022 and the final – as usual in Berlin – on 21 May 2022.

Defending champions Borussia Dortmund, who won the 2021 final clearly against RB Leipzig with 4:1, were already eliminated in the round of 16 this cup season, when BVB lost 2-1 at FC St. Pauli.
