Premiere in Munich: Zwayer to referee Bayern against Bayer

The referee for the Bundesliga top match has been confirmed: Felix Zwayer will lead the duel between FC Bayern and Bayer 04 Leverkusen – just like in February.

Felix Zwayer has already refereed competitive matches in four different competitions this season, but the biggest highlight to date awaits him this Saturday evening: according to information, the 43-year-old Berliner will officiate at the Bundesliga summit between record champions FC Bayern and title defenders Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

This suggests that the refereeing bosses at the DFB were satisfied with Zwayer’s performance on February 10. On that occasion, he handled the top-flight clash between Leverkusen and Bayern in the BayArena without a hitch and with a clear line. The Werkself pulled clear of the chasing pack with a 3-0 win at the BayArena to move five points ahead of FCB and did not relinquish first place until the end of the season. Under Zwayer’s leadership, Leverkusen picked up a total of seven points (2/1/0) in the double season, while Munich not only lost heavily in Leverkusen but also in Frankfurt (1-5). The referee only brought them luck on the first matchday (4-0 in Bremen).

Zwayer will be officiating in a competitive match between Bayer and Bayern for the fourth time on Saturday, but for the first time in Munich. In 2014/15, he showed weaknesses in the DFB Cup quarter-final (5:3 a.e.t. for Bayern), but impressed in the league in 2020/21 (2:1 for Bayern).

The DFB has already used Zwayer twice in the Bundesliga in 2024/25 after his DFB Cup debut in Hamburger SV’s 7-1 win in Meppen: on the first matchday in Dortmund’s 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt and on the third matchday in FC Augsburg’s 3-1 win against FC St. Pauli (3.5). In addition, there are two very different international jobs. Zwayer refereed in the Europa League qualifiers (FCSB Bucharest against Linzer ASK) and in the United Arab Emirates league (Al-Wasl against Al-Nasr).

At the European Championship on home soil, Zwayer made four appearances, more than any other referee. With an average grade of 2.63, he justified UEFA’s trust, even though his penalty whistle, which was correct from a technical point of view, but only after a VAR hint in the semi-final between England and the Netherlands (2:1), did not taste good to everyone involved.
