Premier League cancels more matches

The already tight schedule in the Premier League is further shaken up after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Following the cancellation of Matchday 7, more games are cancelled this coming weekend

As announced on Monday, a total of three games are affected. The games between Chelsea and Liverpool, Manchester United against Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion against Crystal Palace will be cancelled on matchday 8. The remaining matches, meanwhile, are due to take place again next weekend.

The reason for the cancellation is the immense police manpower required around the state funeral (19 September) for the late Queen. There had been extensive consultations, but in the end the authorities had no choice but to cancel the matches, according to a statement by the league.

On Monday, UEFA had already had to cancel the Europa League group match between London-based Arsenal FC and PSV Eindhoven scheduled for Thursday due to a lack of police officers.

There are currently no rescheduling dates for the matches.
