VfL Bochum celebrated their second win in a row. Despite an appealing performance against Eintracht Frankfurt, striker Sebastian Polter still saw weak points in his team’s play.
Stanislav Sestak and Zlatko Dedic were the scorers when VfL Bochum last won a match in the Bundesliga for the second time in a row. That was in January 2010, at the start of the second half of the season away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. It now took over a decade for the club to do it again on Sunday evening – in the 2-0 win over Frankfurt, it was no longer Sestak and Dedic but Danny Blum and Sebastian Polter who provided the second win in a row.
“The game against Fürth was important, but today was much more important,” Polter assessed the victory at the “DAZN” microphone. “It was against a neighbour in the table who was one point ahead of us. That we were able to win, we are immensely proud of that.” Although, in his opinion, not everything was good either. Especially in the second half, VfL had missed a number of the best counter-attacking chances and thus missed an early decision. “That’s exactly what we have to work on,” Polter thought. “We stood much more compactly, but we have to chalk that up to ourselves. Especially in the second half, we played the counter-attacks wildly at times.”
So it remained exciting for a long time – before Polter himself put the lid on it with his goal for 2:0 in injury time. “The ball is in front of me and I’ve never had such a shaky foot,” explained the striker, who had already missed a great chance himself. “I tried to shoot it in – after that it was pure emotion.” And the drought was broken after almost eleven years. However, they should not want to bring back too many memories of that January day in Mönchengladbach. After that, VfL only won one more game and was relegated at the end of the season.
