Polish tennis pro Hubert Hurkacz has won his second Masters title on the ATP Tour. In a thrilling final in Shanghai, the 26-year-old beat slightly favoured Russian Andrei Rublyov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8)
“What a fight, especially emotional,” Hurkacz said of his success. He had triumphed once in a Masters 1000 tournament so far in his career, in Miami in 2021. Rublyov hit his thigh with the racket in disappointment after the defeat.
Hurkacz moves close to the top ten in the world rankings by winning the seventh title of his career and can also still have hopes of participating in the ATP Finals. Olympic champion Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the round of 64 in Shanghai, but is still on track to qualify for the season’s final eight in Turin.
