An altercation breaks out before the game between the Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons. A professional is temporarily arrested. The Pistons coach criticizes the opposing team
Isaiah Stewart of the NBA cellar-dwelling Detroit Pistons (8-46) has been temporarily arrested for assault after an altercation with an opposing player, according to a report by the AP news agency. According to Phoenix police, the 22-year-old received a summons and was released, AP reported on the incident Wednesday (local time).
Drew Eubanks, center for the Phoenix Suns, said the altercation occurred before the game when both teams arrived at the arena. Stewart had punched him and security had intervened. “We are gathering information on what happened and what caused it and are working with the NBA and local authorities,” the Pistons said.
Suns speak of “unprovoked attack” – Pistons defend themselves
The Suns also commented: “The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, acts of violence like this are unacceptable.” Detroit coach Monty Williams – who previously coached the Suns and led them to the 2021 NBA Finals – then criticized the home team and called this statement “irresponsible” because not all the information was available yet. He referred to an investigation by the NBA. “After that, you can make a statement,” Williams said.
Stewart is in his fourth season in the league. He was suspended for two games in 2021 after an on-court altercation with superstar LeBron James. James received a one-game suspension at the time.
The favored Suns (33-22) won the game 116-100, with All-Star Devin Booker picking up an ejection after just a few minutes following his second technical foul.
