Pirelli tire test with Ferrari at Mugello: focus on overheating

After a test at the end of May in Paul Ricard, Pirelli once again relied on the services of Ferrari for two days of testing in Mugello for the 2025 Formula 1 season

On Thursday and Friday, Pirelli held its fifth development test of the Formula 1 season. After Barcelona, Jerez de la Frontera, Suzuka and Le Castellet, the tire manufacturer stopped off in Mugello to compare different compounds and constructions for 2025.

The Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz completed the two days of testing at the wheel of the SF-24. Leclerc set off on Thursday and completed 120 laps, which equates to 630 kilometers. Sainz took over on Friday and completed 135 laps.

Given the nature of the particular track at Mugello, special attention was paid to the hardest compounds in the range planned for next season, with the main strategic aim of reducing overheating.

On Thursday afternoon it rained, so intermediate tires were also used, continuing the work that had begun at the Paul Ricard circuit. Pirelli had already tested there with Leclerc and Sainz two weeks ago.

“First of all, I would like to thank Scuderia Ferrari HP once again for their cooperation in this test,” commented Pirelli’s Motorsport Director Mario Isola on the Mugello test.

“We are in a very busy phase of the season and it is a great success to be able to count on their support once again. These two days were very valuable for us, as we drove on this beautiful track in Mugello, which puts the tires to the test.”

“The configuration has many long, fast corners,” explains Isola, “which is the ideal scenario for evaluating our solutions for the hardest compounds.” “Interesting data” was collected during the 1,337 kilometers driven.

“It will allow us to narrow down the field of the most effective solutions so that we can finalize our selection in the coming months.” Further tests immediately after the British Grand Prix in Silverstone and after the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa will contribute to this
