PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka Wins but Tiger Woods is Back

The 2018 PGA Championship was closely contested with some very good scores, including the -16 from winner Koepka. He won his second major this year, holding off a great attempt from Tiger Woods who finished -14. Woods came in on -6 on the final day at Bellerive, which is clear evidence that he is getting close to being back to his best.

The top of the leaderboard finished:

  • Koepka -16
  • Woods -14
  • Scott -13

T4. S. Cink -11

T4. J. Rahm -11

It was an emotional day for Koepka as he became the first player since Tiger Woods to win the US Open and the US PGA in the same season. Woods achieved that in 2000 and his fortunes have been up and down since then. However, in the last few tournaments, Woods has looked like he is a man that could dominate golf again like he did all of those years ago.

The day was definitely Koepka’s as he held his nerve and a run of three birdies on the front nine powered him into the lead. Afterwards, Koepka said: “For some reason the majors get my attention more, every shot is so important. You have to be patient and I always do that very well in the majors.”

Could Woods make the US Ryder Cup team?

For Tiger Woods, his recent form could have helped him play his way into contention for the US Ryder Cup team. The eight automatic qualifiers have now been decided but there are four places still up for grabs over the next few weeks. If Woods can make the team, it will round off a remarkable comeback for the former World No. 1. Koepka’s victory ensured that he was the first name to qualify for the US team so he will go into the event with an excellent run of form.
