Andrea Petkovic is the only German tennis player so far to reach the last 16 at the European Open in Hamburg.
The 34-year-old Petkovic defeated Tamara Korpatsch (27) from Kaltenkirchen in the first round 6:3, 6:3 in 80 minutes. In the round of the best 16 Petkovic, seeded eighth, will now face Misaki Doi from Japan.
Jan-Lennard Struff (32) from Warstein missed a small surprise in his 6:3, 3:6, 6:7 (2:7) against world number 26 Karen Khachanov from Russia despite a strong performance.
Lys, Schunk, Topo and Rehberg out
First out were junior hopefuls Eva Lys, Nastasja Schunk, Marko Topo and Max Hans Rehberg. This means that out of eleven German professionals who started in the main draw, only five are still in the ATP and WTA clay court tournaments before the conclusion of the first round on Tuesday. Four of them, including Wimbledon quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier, will play their first-round matches on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Lys had to admit defeat to Argentina’s Maria Carle on Monday in 2:28 hours with 5:7, 6:3, 2:6. The Hamburg player was too inconsistent to reach the round of 16 for the first time at the Rothenbaum. Schunk (18) lost 1:6, 4:6 to Alexandra Sasnovich from Belarus.
The 18-year-old qualifier Topo lost his opening match 5:7, 3:6 to Alex Molcan from Slovakia. The Munich native competed for Serbia in the past and has been playing for Germany again since this summer. After a good start, the 18-year-old Rehberg lost 6:3, 5:7, 1:6 against Jozef Kovalik from Slovakia.
