“Personal” decision: Ramos turned down a lifetime contract at Sevilla

Sergio Ramos (38) is leaving Sevilla FC after just under a year. At a press conference, he explained why – and that things will continue

So basically it was a matter of principle. It was about ticking off something that Sergio Ramos really wanted to tick off. This idea had been suspected for some time, but on Tuesday lunchtime the 38-year-old Spaniard, who is leaving his childhood sweetheart Sevilla FC after just under a year, made it more or less official.

Ramos called it an “open wound” not to have left the Andalusians for Real Madrid in 2005, and the die-hard fans did not forgive him until his return. There were repeated skirmishes between the fans and Ramos, who had always expressed that he still had the club in his heart, at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan when the Whites visited.

Sporting-wise, things were not going well for Sevilla

He had also returned for his father and grandparents, who were probably in a similar situation, said the central defender – as well as for Antonio Puerta and José Antonio Reyes, two deceased former teammates. Doing them justice had been a “clear goal”, said Ramos.

The affair of the heart may not have lasted ten months, but Ramos will not be leaving Sevilla FC in a hurry a second time. “My contract has been fulfilled”, he revealed, as well as a special offer from the club: “I would like to emphasize that they have given me the opportunity to stay here and receive a lifetime contract”, said the World and European Champion, who repeatedly expressed his gratitude. He did not make use of this opportunity.

The decision is a “personal and family one”, explained the father of four, although sporting considerations could also play a role. The record Europa League winners were in danger of relegation at times last season, ultimately finishing 14th in La Liga

Ramos mentions USA affinity – career end not an option

Ramos spoke of a “love that lasts a lifetime”, of “no goodbyes” because there will be a reunion. He is leaving “with a clear conscience and a sincere hug” – but where is he going? The veteran didn’t want to reveal that yet.

“I haven’t made a decision yet and haven’t signed with any team,” said Ramos, also saying that he has “options”. There is currently a lot of talk about a move to the MLS, and the four-time Champions League winner only fueled this: “I’m a big NBA fan, I have a good relationship with Luka Doncic. The United States is a place I really like on a family level.”

In any case, ending his career is out of the question, Ramos made clear. “Not at all. I feel physically very good and healthy. “
