For riding slowly on the racing line in qualifying, Jack Miller is moved back on the grid – Fabio Quartararo speaks of “unfair” behaviour
Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) and Jack Miller (Ducati) have clashed again. A fortnight ago in Indonesia there was a contact during the duel in the race. Miller was not satisfied with Quartararo’s behaviour. There was no penalty for the situation.
Now the two clashed again in Argentina in qualifying. In the closing stages of Q2, Quartararo was on a flying lap. As he went through the fast left turn of turn 5 towards turn 6, Miller was slow on the racing line.
In the hairpin to turn 7, Quartararo braked and the lap was ruined. The race stewards immediately announced an investigation into the incident. “I was told I would get a penalty,” said Jack Miller.
I will be moved back three places on the grid. It wasn’t like I was deliberately trying to get in anyone’s way though.” Race stewards Bill Cumbow, Freddie Spencer and Andres Somolinos already confirmed the penalty with a statement.
There was no personal discussion between Miller and Quartararo directly after qualifying. What does the reigning world champion think about it? “It’s one of the fastest parts of the track. I don’t want to complain. He didn’t see me, it can happen,” said Quartararo.
But the Frenchman does think Miller should have been more prudent. “If you start a corner very fast in fourth gear and then there is someone – not in the middle, but still on the racing line – it’s annoying.”
“For me it’s not fair to be on the racing line like that. He was in a position where you shouldn’t be. In turn 5 you can see if someone is coming. Then you stay left and don’t go on the line. But I don’t care. I don’t want to say if it was dangerous.”
Nevertheless, Quartararo is sure that it cost him a better starting position than sixth: “On this track, if you don’t make the time on the first lap, you’ve already lost.” Due to the demotion, Miller will start from position 14 (to the grid).
