Pascal Wehrlein: Hospitalized again after Sao Paulo crash

Formula E World Champion Pascal Wehrlein reveals that he has been back in medical treatment after his accident at the season opener

After his serious accident at the season opener of the 2024/25 Formula E World Championship in Sao Paulo, reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein had to seek medical treatment again. Ahead of the second race of the season in Mexico City, the Porsche driver revealed that persistent headaches forced him to go to the hospital after returning home.

“I was conscious the whole time but had a headache for a few days. When I got home, I went to the hospital again because I was struggling a bit with the pain,” explains Wehrlein. However, the symptoms have now completely subsided.

“The good thing is that we’ve had a few weeks since the last race. It took me a few days to recover, and the timing over Christmas was perfect to get a good rest,” adds the German.

Wehrlein’s car was involved in a collision with Nick Cassidy’s Jaguar at the season opener, causing it to roll over. The car landed upside down in the barriers, with the rollbar and halo system suffering severe damage. “The Halo was torn out of the chassis, the damage was considerable. It was disturbing that I hit the wall with my head,” reports Wehrlein.

The impact, which subjected Wehrlein to around 20g, was an unusual kind of stress, as the forces at work in an upside-down accident are different from what he is used to. Despite the drama, Wehrlein has now put the incident behind him and is focusing on the second race of the season in Mexico City on January 11.

“I see no reason why we shouldn’t be competitive,” says Wehrlein. His new car was built directly on the track in Mexico City, which presented the team with additional challenges. ‘It was an incredible effort by the team to build the car here. They did a fantastic job,’ he says, praising the Porsche team.
