The current outlook for the 2024 Formula 1 season with the confirmed drivers and teams as well as all driver changes
What does Lewis Hamilton’s sporting future look like? Will Nico Hülkenberg continue at Haas? And which drivers will get the remaining open cockpits? Ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 season, there are still some unanswered questions about the driver market. We provide an up-to-date overview of which teams have already confirmed their drivers for 2024 and where there are still vacancies:
Some drivers are set for years to come: Max Verstappen, for example, has signed a very long-term contract with Red Bull, while Charles Leclerc is staying with Ferrari for the medium term. Other drivers have to worry about continuing their Formula 1 career or simply do not yet have a new contract.

Red Bull: Max Verstappen sealed his medium-term future before the start of the 2022 season by signing a contract extension with Red Bull – until 2028! No one else in the field has so much planning security. Sergio Perez is also still on the grid: he extended his contract during the 2022 season by a further two years up to and including 2024.
Ferrari: Charles Leclerc already signed a long-term contract until the end of 2024 in 2019 and a contract extension for “several years” in spring 2024. He is likely to remain at Ferrari until the end of 2026. Carlos Sainz received a two-year contract extension during the 2022 Formula 1 season. This means he will also be on the grid as a Ferrari driver in 2024.
Mercedes: Both cockpits have now been officially allocated for 2024. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were confirmed at Mercedes in August 2023 until the end of 2025. Meaning: Hamilton will be driving in Formula 1 at least until he is 40 years old!
Alpine: Esteban Ocon will remain with Alpine beyond the 2023 season. In 2021, he was promised a cockpit up to and including 2024. Alpine newcomer Pierre Gasly is also likely to race for the team in 2024 because he has signed a multi-year contract for the 2023 season
McLaren: Lando Norris will remain a McLaren driver for the foreseeable future. He has agreed a long-term contract extension with McLaren in 2021. The exact term is not known, but could extend until the end of 2025. Oscar Piastri, joined the team for several years in the 2023 season.
Alfa Romeo: Valtteri Bottas has expressly signed a multi-year contract with Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season. The exact term is not known. However, both he and Guanyu Zhou have now been confirmed for 2024.
Aston Martin: The racing team quickly filled the gap left by Sebastian Vettel’s retirement from Formula 1 after the 2022 season, announcing the signing of former world champion Fernando Alonso just four days later. Alonso is set to stay until at least the end of 2024. Lance Stroll will also remain in the team alongside him. This is only a formality anyway: his father Lawrence Stroll also holds the reins of the Formula 1 team of the same name as CEO of Aston Martin.
Haas: On his return to Formula 1, Kevin Magnussen signed a multi-year agreement with Haas. Nico Hülkenberg’s Formula 1 comeback for the 2023 season is also set to run for several years. At the end of the summer break, Haas put its money where its mouth is and confirmed both drivers for 2024.
AlphaTauri: The Red Bull Group traditionally only issues one-year contracts to its drivers at AlphaTauri and will also be racing with Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo in 2024. For Liam Lawson, who was allowed to stand in for Ricciardo for a few races in 2023, only the role of reserve driver remains.
Williams: Alexander Albon has signed a multi-year contract in 2022 and will remain with Williams “beyond 2023”. Team-mate Logan Sargeant’s contract was extended by one year until the end of 2024 after his rookie season in 2023
