The groundbreaking ceremony for a new era for AC Milan and Inter Milan is to take place before the end of this year. Their venerable Giuseppe Meazza Stadium has to make way for a long-planned new stadium as their home ground.
In mid-2019, it was leaked that Milan and Inter would be allowed to demolish their home ground in San Siro, which opened in 1926. A year later, the preliminary confirmation followed. At the end of 2021, the announcement of the new “cathedral” with the first rendered images – and the indication that the new magnificent building was inspired by the cathedral and the Art Nouveau gallery Vittorio Emanuele II. in the heart of the Lombard metropolis.
But that’s not all – and it’s certainly not the end of the story: after a setback in the plans in summer 2023, when the Regional Commission for the Regional Heritage of Lombardy classified the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium as “architectural heritage” and emphasized the associated “cultural interest” of the region, the message for the clubs to move out and realize the new project of the venue in San Donato Milanese followed in February 2024.
A long process that may even be customary for such major construction sites over a period of several years.
Completion 2035, possibly operational as early as 2031
Now, however, the ground-breaking ceremony can take place – and it will even take place this year. Not in the municipality near Milan, but again in the San Siro district of Milan. This information was leaked on Tuesday. A stadium is now planned near the previous location.
More specifically, according to documents published by the local authorities, construction work in Milan is to begin in “the second half of 2025”. According to this, completion is planned for 2035, but the stadium is to be put into operation as early as 2031. The total costs are estimated at 1.2 billion euros.
Milan and Inter had initially made an offer of 197 million euros to purchase the aging Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and an adjacent parking lot, which currently still belong to the city of Milan. According to the clubs’ plans, the new stadium with 71,000 seats is to be built there.
Restaurants and shops are also to be integrated in order to increase revenue.
The Milan city council has now published a call for tenders “to see if there are any better offers than those from Inter Milan and AC Milan”.
