Over 30 million euros? Greenwood dares to make a fresh start at OM

Mason Greenwood dares to make a fresh start in Ligue 1. Manchester United finally let go of the former hopeful and can hope for over 30 million euros from Olympique Marseille – including a hefty bonus?

What had already been hinted at in recent days is now official: Mason Greenwood is closing the Manchester United chapter for good and daring to make a fresh start. But not in La Liga, where he played on loan last season. Instead, the 22-year-old is moving to Ligue 1 for the first time in his career.

The English attacker signed for Olympique Marseille on Thursday, although his new employer did not disclose the duration of his contract. However, Manchester United, who are now finally letting the former hopeful go, will be compensated handsomely: According to information from The Athletic, the Red Devils will receive a basic transfer fee of €27.6 million in the first move, which could rise to €31.6 million due to bonuses.

According to consistent media reports, United also own shares in the resale – up to 50 percent are said to be involved. However, OM and Greenwood are likely to be interested in building up their joint project first.

Does de Zerbi also make Greenwood better?

An argument for a move to the traditional French club would certainly be their new coach: Olympique were in the running this summer for the coveted Roberto de Zerbi, who has proven not only at Brighton & Hove Albion how he can develop individual players and at the same time form a collective.

Greenwood, who was suspended by United in January 2022 after serious allegations and subsequently even arrested, rehabilitated himself in sporting terms last season at Getafe FC. In 36 competitive matches, Greenwood scored ten goals and set up six more.

The right winger regularly flashed his undoubted potential in La Liga. Benfica, Juventus and Napoli are said to have been interested in Greenwood alongside OM. The one-time England international brings with him to Marseille the experience of 129 competitive matches for Manchester United, in which he scored 35 goals and set up a further twelve
