Out for Otte in Miami – Swiatek becomes new number one

Miami – German tennis pro Oscar Otte has been eliminated in the second round of the tournament in Miami.

The world number 74 from Cologne lost 6:7 (9:11), 1:6 to Frenchman Gael Monfils. The 35-year-old former top ten player prevailed over the Cologne player after a good hour and a half of play.

This makes Alexander Zverev the last German participant in Florida. The world number three won 6:4, 3:6, 6:3 against Borna Coric from Croatia. The next opponent for the Olympic champion from Hamburg is Mackenzie McDonald from the USA, whom he only recently defeated at the tournament in Montpellier.

In the women’s singles, Iga Swiatek of Poland beat Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-0 in the second round to become the new number one in the world rankings after the tournament from 4 April. The Australian Ashleigh Barty, who had been at the top so far, surprisingly ended her career this week and her name will no longer appear in the rankings at her request.

Thus Swiatek moves up. “I never really expected that to happen. It makes it even more surreal for me,” said the 20-year-old, who broke into the world’s top rankings in 2020 with a surprise French Open win.
