Osnabrück coach Scherning and the line-up puzzle

VfL Osnabrück host FSV Zwickau on Saturday (2pm, LIVE! on kicker). Coach Daniel Scherning is spoilt for choice when it comes to personnel.

The VfL’s last attempt at a place in the sun failed on the last matchday, the Lower Saxons were beaten 2-0 by FCK at the Betzenberg and were thus unable to capitalise on the slip-up by leaders Magdeburg (3-2 in Halle). “The desire is great to do better,” centre-back Lukas Gugganig is quoted as saying on the club’s own website. And by that he surely means first and foremost the targeted victory against the Saxons rather than the possible and at least temporary jump to first place after the competition, apart from Viktoria Berlin (who are level on points with 1860 Munich, also on Saturday), does not have to play until Sunday. In any case, the anticipation for the home game is growing for the fourth-placed team in the table, also because of the largest crowd support allowed since the pandemic outbreak – 9315 fans will come.

With the return of former player and coach Joe Enochs, who is currently in 17th place in the relegation zone with FSV, Osnabrück coach Scherning will have almost all his players at his disposal after Sven Köhler, who was last suspended with a yellow card, returns and defensive rookie Maurice Trapp should also be available again.

So the line-up could give the 37-year-old a bit of a headache. The Lower Saxons, on the other hand, have got on very well with their opponents in their home games so far: Zwickau have visited the VfL three times since 2016, winning all three matches without conceding a goal (1:0; 4:0; 3:0).
