After a turbulent few days, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has spoken out and declared his support for the Italian champions. At least to their fans.
Does everyone love each other again under Vesuvius? The club’s social media department had made fun of Victor Osimhen, of all people, for missing a penalty on Tiktok – an unfortunate situation that caused quite a stir and upset.
The Nigerian, who had scored the Partenopei to the Italian championship for the first time in 33 years last season, even considered legal action against the club. He then deleted all Napoli-related pictures from his Instagram channel.
Fight with coach Garcia probably settled
The 24-year-old has been reluctant to speak out verbally, but now he has done so – via his social media. And took a bit of the wind out of the sails of all the explosiveness, which had also been caused by a substitution dispute with new coach Rudi Garcia (“We have cleared the air”).
“Coming to Naples in 2020 was a wonderful decision. The Neapolitans have shown me so much love,” Osimhen wrote in the statement, which is primarily addressed to the fans. “I will not let anything come between us.” Rumours had been doing the rounds in the media that Osimhen might even leave SSC after the Tiktok incident.
Furthermore, Napoli fans were confronted with accusations of racism that had emerged through comments to that effect under social media posts. Osimhen took up the cudgels for them, some of whom were highly critical of coach Garcia: “The accusations against the Neapolitans are false. Many of them have become my friends and part of my daily life.”
The passion of Napoli fans “lights my fire to play for this club,” said the reigning Serie A top scorer. “My love for this crest is unwavering.” Osimhen’s next opportunity to show that comes on Tuesday night in the Champions League against Real Madrid, with whom he has only recently been linked.
