In the fight for the 2025 Formula 1 title, Oscar Piastri wants to have a say: the tools are there, he just has to use them properly
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri considers himself well prepared for the fight for the Formula 1 World Championship in the upcoming season. At the same time, the Australian admits that he must now “consistently apply” his skills to meet this challenge.
“I feel like I’m at a point now where on some days I almost have all the tools I need,” Piastri told Autosport, “I’m just not using them as much as I’d like to yet. Last year [2023] I didn’t have all the tools. Some I had, but some I still lacked.”
In the wake of McLaren’s recovery, Piastri was also able to improve in the 2024 Formula One season and take his first Grand Prix victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This makes the Australian the first Formula One race winner born in the 21st century.
In the team duel, however, Piastri was clearly beaten by Lando Norris. This was also due to a weakness in tire management,
Tire management is an area that the Australian has also recognized himself and in which he has already made progress. Nevertheless, Piastri self-critically admits: “I still have a lot to learn and improve.”
On the whole, the Australian is satisfied with his personal progress in his second Formula One season: “Whether it’s race pace, qualifying or racing, I’ve had some good moments in these areas,” says Piastri. “Overall, I’m happy with my performance across the board.”
However, the Australian also had to realize that the air at the front of the field is getting thinner and thinner. “The weaknesses you have are more visible at the front of the field than further back. But I think I have everything I need. I just have to be able to deliver consistently.”
