One year of searching for a club over: De Gea signs for Florence

After more than a year, David de Gea has found a new club. The Spanish goalkeeper, who previously played for Manchester United for twelve years, has signed for AC Florence in Italy

“David de Gea had an unforgettable and successful time” in Manchester, for which he left his youth club Atletico Madrid in 2011. This made it all the more difficult for the Spanish goalkeeper to say goodbye to the Red Devils a year ago, who – probably also for cost reasons – decided against an extension with de Gea and opted for André Onana.

More than a year and numerous speculations about his future later, it is now not only clear that the 33-year-old will continue his career, but also where. The goalkeeper was officially unveiled in the Tuscan capital of Florence via a press release on Friday evening, after the Fiorentina fans had already welcomed him euphorically at the gates of Florence airport.

Florence are not afraid to invest

There is no doubt that de Gea will take on the role of Pietro Terracciano at last year’s eighth-placed Serie A side, who can still secure their place in the Conference League by qualifying. The 34-year-old goalkeeper, whose contract is valid until next summer, played an impressive 47 competitive matches for the club last season.

De Gea is not Fiorentina’s only big-name summer signing. In addition to former Dortmund and Wolfsburg player Marin Pongragic, Juventus’ own Moise Kean also joined the team from Tuscany. Meanwhile, defender Nikola Milenkovic could not be kept – the Serbian will play for Nottingham Forest in the future
