“One of the most accomplished managers in the Premier League”: Moyes returns to the Toffees

The return is perfect: In the relegation battle, Everton FC presents David Moyes as the new head coach. The Scot was already on the sidelines at Goodison Park between 2002 and 2013.

Two days after the surprising dismissal of coach Sean Dyche before the cup game against Peterborough (2-0), the Premier League club Everton presented its new coach – and it’s an old acquaintance: As speculated in some English media outlets, David Moyes is returning to Goodison Park after eleven and a half years. After only one win in the last eleven league games, the 61-year-old Scot is expected to lead the 16th-placed team out of the relegation battle.

“It’s great to be back,” the new head coach commented on his return to Liverpool on Everton’s website, adding: ”I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to return to this great club.”

Moyes had already managed the Liverpool club in 518 games between 2002 and 2013, reaching the FA Cup final and the Europa League four times, before his path led him to the Theater of Dreams as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor – a legacy that ultimately proved too great.

Conference League win with the Hammers

After stops at Real Sociedad and AFC Sunderland – which the Scot was unable to save from relegation from the Premier League – Moyes was drawn to West Ham United, which he managed for five years until last summer. It was with the Hammers that the former center-back celebrated his greatest coaching success to date, when he led the Londoners to victory in the Conference League.

The Toffees are delighted with the return of the 61-year-old, who is “one of the most experienced and accomplished managers in the Premier League” at this “crucial time in Everton’s history”.

“With more than a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to guide us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium,” said chairman Marc Watts, who is looking forward to “working with David to lay the foundation for a new era for Everton”.
