One change says it all: Solanke hurts weakened Magpies

After a poor performance in Dortmund, Newcastle followed it up with another in Bournemouth. This also continued a Bruno Guimaraes streak

Will the Champions League remain an interlude for Newcastle United for the time being? The BVB group is in danger of being eliminated, and the top four places in the Premier League are out of sight for the time being on Saturday. The Magpies, who are struggling with personnel problems, lost 2-0 at basement side Bournemouth on Saturday evening, who celebrated their second win of the season and moved out of the relegation places.

In the 2-0 defeat at Dortmund in midweek, attacker Wilson was the next key player to suffer an injury, and to make matters worse, Bruno Guimaraes was also suspended at Bournemouth. And so manager Eddie Howe sent an emergency eleven onto the pitch without a real striker, but with 17-year-old league debutant Miley – who later left the pitch for 18-year-old league debutant Parkinson. A change that said it all, especially as Howe had had to replace the stricken Almiron early on (31st).

Unintentional “steep pass” sets up Solanke’s brace

In the first half, the Magpies still created a number of good opportunities and were repeatedly thwarted by Bournemouth’s recovered keeper Neto. However, after the break, the visitors were missing almost everything, while the courageous Cherries began to initiate attack after attack and were finally rewarded: Goal-scorer Solanke beat Pope in the near corner after an unfortunate “steep pass” from Newcastle midfielder Willock (60′) and scored a brace from a corner (73′). The home side then missed numerous other chances

Newcastle’s first league defeat since September 2 sees them slip to at least seventh in the table, and Howe will now hope that a few players return during the upcoming international break. After all, Bruno Guimaraes will be eligible to play again. Since the Brazilian made his debut in February 2022, the Magpies have not won any of the seven games in which he has been absent.
