The abandoned derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos last October was finally decided today, Thursday. Olympiakos had appealed to the CAS. The good news has now come from Lausanne that the record champions will at least be credited with one point again
In the last instance, the Greek sports tribunals scored the abandoned derby against Panathinaikos 0:3 against Olympiakos. In addition, according to the regulations, one point was deducted. Only this point will be credited back to Olympiakos following today’s ruling by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport based in Lausanne.
Although Olympiakos still only occupy fourth place in the current Super League table, the gap to league leaders AEK (58 points) is now only four points. PAOK (57) and Panathinaikos (55) also see their rivals from Piraeus (now on 54 points) closing the gap. The four-way battle for the title is therefore likely to be quite close and exciting.
The regular phase of the Superleague ends on Sunday and the decisive play-offs begin on March 10. There, the top six will play out this year’s champions and two participants in the upcoming Europa Conference League qualifiers in head-to-head matches with first and second legs.
As Panathinaikos will play the cup final against fifth-placed Aris or Panetolikos Agrinio, fourth-placed Olympiakos could even miss out on European competition next season if the northern Greeks are successful. This is another reason why this one point could still be hugely important
