Formula 1 does not nominate a replacement race for the cancelled Russian Grand Prix, it remains at 22 race weekends in the 2022 Formula 1 season
The decision has been made: Formula 1’s Russian Grand Prix, cancelled due to the Ukraine war, will not be replaced by another race. This has now been announced by Formula 1. Accordingly, the 2022 season will not see 23 World Championship rounds for the first time as planned, but only 22, as was last the case in the 2021 season.
The race in Sochi in Russia was originally to have been held on 25 September 2022 as the 17th championship round. Following the Russian attack on Ukraine, those responsible had initially postponed the Grand Prix indefinitely, but shortly afterwards finally cancelled it and the Formula One contract was terminated.
Following the cancellation of the Russian race, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) issued a calendar update that included another, unspecified event between the Grands Prix in Monza (Italy) on 11 September and in Singapore on 2 October – without any specific date or indication of a venue.
An additional race in Singapore was considered, but rejected. Qatar and Hockenheim had also been offered. Formula 1 decided against it in each case, also for logistical reasons. Now the three-week gap in the calendar remains.
What’s more: because the budget cap in Formula 1 is basically designed for 21 races and additional money is released for Grands Prix beyond that, the total budget of the individual teams is reduced by 1.1 million euros each to 126.1 million euros.
