Norwich City are the first to be relegated from the Premier League. Watford FC will soon follow. But who will be the third to go down? Burnley celebrated a very important away win on Saturday and increased Everton FC’s worries.
Promotion, relegation, promotion, relegation – now that’s what you call a lift team. Norwich City have been unable to avoid going down to the Championship since Saturday. The 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa sealed the Canaries’ relegation prematurely. In the remaining four games, Dean Smith’s team, who took over from Daniel Farke as manager in November, can only try to improve on their points tally from the 2019/20 season. At the time, Norwich were also relegated in last place with (as is currently the case) 21 points. The last two relegations were followed by immediate promotion as Championship champions.
Watford FC, with veteran coach Roy Hodgson, have also been in trouble since Saturday. A home win in the relegation battle against Burnley FC would have kept their vague hopes of staying in the league alive – and the Hornets led 1-0 until the closing stages. But thanks to a late double strike from Cork (83rd) and Brownhill (86th), Burnley still managed to secure their third league win in a row and three very important points in the relegation battle at Vicarage Road.
Burnley take next important step – Lampard’s worries grow
While Watford’s eleventh (!) successive home defeat has left them twelve points adrift of the relegation zone (with four games to go), Burnley moved past Leeds United, who are level on points, into 16th place and are now five points clear of Everton FC in 18th in the Premier League table.
The traditional Liverpool club still has two games to play, but they also have a tough task ahead of them. Another defeat on Sunday at home to Chelsea FC, long-time Everton coach Frank Lampard’s club, would take the Toffees another step closer to their first relegation in 71 years. The Premier League, founded in 1992, would then lose a permanent member on its 30th anniversary.
