Norwegian clubs want to abolish video evidence

Video arbitration was introduced in Norwegian professional football in 2023. Now it is to be abolished again. A majority of the clubs voted in favor of this.

A majority of the clubs in Norwegian professional football have voted to abolish the video referee. As announced by the league association NTF, they are asking the leadership of the national football association NFF to propose the quickest possible elimination of the video referee. This should then be adopted at an association meeting in the next few weeks, it was said.

In a vote, 19 clubs were in favor of abolishing it, while only 13 clubs voted against. They are also calling for the VAR to be phased out of the top Norwegian division, the Eliteserien, in 2025. It was only introduced there in 2023.

“We recognize that the technology has potential, but we can see from today’s discussion and the subsequent vote that the majority of our clubs believe that the current version of the VAR is not working well enough,” said Cato Haug, chairman of Norsk Toppfotball, in a statement.
