Mats Hummels was disgruntled after the clear 4-2 defeat against Glasgow Rangers – and spoke unsparingly about Dortmund’s weaknesses.
“We play a lot of nonsensical football,” Dortmund’s head of defence Mats Hummels raged on the microphone of “RTL” after the defeat against Glasgow Rangers (2:4). Hummels was annoyed by the many “unnecessary ball losses” and easy goals conceded. “You can win and lose like that. But you’ll never be successful like that. “
A look at the past few games illustrates Borussia’s ups and downs: the clear 5:1 win against Freiburg was followed by a cup exit at St. Pauli (1:2), a 3:2 win at Hoffenheim, a crashing 2:5 against Leverkusen – and now a clear 3:0 at Union, followed by a 2:4 defeat in the Europa League. Hummels therefore demands: “The big headline for us is: serious, success-oriented football.” And that is precisely what unnecessary ball losses would prevent time and again.
Not a Dortmund strength
“The coach addresses it, we don’t implement it in many positions,” Hummels took his teammates to task. “When do you play which passes, in which situations is risk good and where not?” The defender was not at all pleased with the decisions made against Glasgow: “The way I address it, you can already tell that it’s not one of our strengths. “
Glasgow Rangers made the most of Dortmund’s lazy minutes before and after the break to put themselves in an excellent position for the second leg. Hummels and Co. will need a marked improvement in performance next Thursday if they are to make it through to the last 16 of the Europa League at Glasgow’s Ibrox Stadium.
