Gladbach’s Joe Scally is experiencing a rapid rise. Now even his debut for the US national team beckons.
The next dream could come true for Scally on Saturday. For the US national team, the World Cup qualifier against Mexico is coming up in Cincinnati. Borussia will also be watching very closely to see if national coach Gregg Berhalter will help the right-back make his debut.
But even if Scally has to be patient a little longer – the first call-up to the senior team of the United States alone means a distinction for the 18-year-old newcomer. Gladbach is pleased that the performances of the high-flyer have also been registered and rewarded in his home country. “A year ago, nobody knew him. Now he replaces Stefan Lainer quite excellently, you can let him play on the right or the left,” praised coach Adi Hütter last week.
Hütter sees no exaggerated burden
For the Fohlenelf, Scally was in the starting line-up in all 13 competitive matches and was only taken off the pitch twice early, on the 8th matchday in the 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart (81st minute) and in the 5-0 cup triumph against FC Bayern (69th minute)
An energy-sapping programme for the attack-minded teenager, who recently seemed a little tired towards the end of the games. Nevertheless, Hütter does not believe that the extra (travel) burden plays a role. “When you’re a young player and you’re going through all that right now like he is, it can only be an extra motivation and give you self-confidence,” the VfL coach said.
The second World Cup qualifier of the current international campaign awaits the US team on Tuesday. It’s against host Jamaica in Kingston. The USA are second in the North and Central America final standings with 11 points after six days of play. Leading the table is Mexico with 14 points.
