The German Basketball League is shrinking. In the new season, only 17 teams will play in the world champion country
Only 17 teams will play in the Basketball Bundesliga in the new season. Only the Fraport Skyliners will replace the two relegated teams Tübingen and Crailsheim. The Karlsruhe Lions, like the Hessians, had qualified for promotion, but waived their right to participate. They had not submitted any license documents.
While in previous years a wild card was awarded to an 18th team, the Bundesliga decided at an extraordinary meeting convened at short notice not to open a corresponding procedure this time and to start the coming season with a 17-team league. This was announced by the league on Monday.
Crailsheim, who were relegated, were the only club to intensively consider the conditions for a wild card allocation for the coming season in accordance with the licensing statute, but ultimately decided not to submit an application.
