Michael Wimmer, once interim coach at VfB Stuttgart and most recently in charge at Austria Vienna for a year and a half, was supposed to take over as head coach at AIK Solna.
There were indeed concrete talks between Wimmer and the tenth-placed team in the Swedish first division, the Allsvenskan. This was first reported by the newspaper Sportsbladet. According to information, Wimmer was even on site in Solna in the province of Stockholms Iän last weekend around the time of the 2-1 defeat against Kalmar FF to talk to club officials about the successor to Henning Berg, who resigned in mid-June. In the end, however, the 44-year-old German and AIK do not seem to have found a common ground. For the time being, former Berg assistant Henok Goitom is likely to remain on the bench.
Wimmer replaced Pellegrino Matarazzo as interim coach at VfB Stuttgart, who were in serious danger of relegation at the time, in the fall of 2022 after holding several positions in the youth sector and as assistant coach, but despite four wins from eight competitive matches, he was not entrusted with the permanent mandate and left VfB – which Bruno Labbadia managed with little success from then on. The Swabians only saved themselves in the relegation play-offs after Labbadia was replaced by Sebastian Hoeneß.
Wimmer was also considered a potential candidate at Kaiserslautern
In January 2023, the Dingolfingen native signed for Austria Vienna and made it through the play-off round to qualify for the Conference League, where he was eliminated by Legia Warsaw in the third round. Due to a financially induced, further personnel drain – among other things, the club sold top scorer Haris Tabakovic to Hertha BSC – the Viennese narrowly missed out on the 2023/24 championship round and released Wimmer and his assistant Ahmet Koc in mid-May after a 4-0 defeat against Wolfsberger AC. Wimmer was also considered a potential candidate at German second division club 1.FC Kaiserslautern, where Markus Anfang has taken over from Friedhelm Funkel.
