Julian Nagelsmann will not be returning to FC Bayern as a coach. Instead, the 36-year-old will extend his contract as national team coach at the DFB until 2026
“This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to coach the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to inspire an entire country,” Nagelsmann was quoted as saying in an official statement. The home European Championship begins on June 14 with Germany’s clash against Scotland.
Nagelsmann took over in September 2023 and initially only signed a contract up to and including the European Championships. The 36-year-old’s new contract runs until the conclusion of the next World Cup in 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Most recently, Germany won the international matches in France (2:0) and against the Netherlands (2:1). Nagelsmann was “very touched by the enthusiasm of the fans. Together we now want to play a successful home European Championship, that’s what we’re all burning for. After that, I’m really looking forward to the challenge of the World Cup together with my coaching team. “
Bernd Neuendorf also commented on the appointment. “It’s a strong signal for the DFB and the national team that Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championships. Because he is on the wish list of many big clubs throughout Europe,” said the DFB President. “But the national team is more than just a job for Julian Nagelsmann, it is a matter close to his heart. Now there is planning security and everyone can concentrate fully on a successful performance at the European Championship. “
The Bayern search continues
One of these big clubs was FC Bayern, but with the contract extension, a return to the record champions is off the table for the time being. Munich are still looking for a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who is leaving FCB at the end of the season. Nagelsmann, who national team director Rudi Völler described as a “tactical expert”, took over at FCB in the summer of 2021 and was released in March 2023.
