Wimbledon surprise Jule Niemeier has been eliminated in the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Lausanne.
The 22-year-old from Dortmund lost to the Russian Anastassija Potapowa 4:6, 2:6 in 84 minutes. Niemeier gave up her serve twice in both sets. This means that there are no more German tennis players in Lausanne.
For Niemeier, the clay court event was the first tournament since her strong performances in Wimbledon. At the grass-court classic, she had celebrated the greatest success of her career by reaching the quarter-finals. She had been eliminated in the round of the best eight against Tatjana Maria. The 34-year-old subsequently lost in the semi-finals and decided not to take part in Lausanne.
