After the debacle in Freiburg, FC Augsburg now face a difficult away game in Dortmund. They will have to improve a lot if they want to avoid another defeat against one of the best home and offensive teams in the league.
After the disastrous 0:3 in Freiburg, attacker Florian Niederlechner spoke of a “catastrophic” first half and of “scaredy-cat football”. With a view to the upcoming game at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (3.30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker), the striker added a clear warning: “If we perform like that, we’ll get two more goals.” FCA could have conceded them in Freiburg, but the weakest offensive team in the league (only two goals) had no real chances of its own. In the best attack, a cross from Mads Pedersen found no taker.
Next weekend, Augsburg will face BVB, who have the second-best offence in the league with 17 goals. Dortmund have won all three of their games at home so far this season, scoring twelve goals in the process – but have also conceded six goals at home. So Borussia is not invulnerable, but it is definitely a fire hazard. FCA will have to be careful not to go down to defeat again.
“Away games in Freiburg and Dortmund, that’s a board. We blew the first one to smithereens,” said Markus Weinzierl, announcing, “We will definitely show a different side, although we know that it’s incredibly difficult to score and win in Dortmund.” The coach and manager Stefan Reuter had clearly criticised the team’s performance and attitude after the performance in Freiburg. Looking ahead, Reuter said, “You have to put things like that away and learn from it that the all-important thing is that we need intensity in our game.” FCA must bring that to the pitch in Dortmund – in terms of running and fighting. Otherwise Niederlechner’s warning could quickly become reality.
