Nico Rosberg is closing his Extreme E team: No participation in Extreme H

Two championship titles in Extreme E, but this chapter is coming to an end – Nico Rosberg is shutting down his team – No participation in the successor series Extreme H planned

After four years in Extreme E, former Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg’s racing team is closing its doors. Rosberg X Racing (RXR), as the team was officially called, celebrated great success in this racing series with electric SUVs.

In its debut season in 2021, RXR won the championship title. Johann Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor won three of the five events. They beat Sebastien Loeb and Cristina Gutierrez, who were driving for Lewis Hamilton’s team X44.

In 2022, Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky was Kristoffersson’s teammate. They captured two victories but narrowly lost the championship to Loeb/Gutierrez and Team X44. In the third season, the tables turned again.

Kristoffersson/Ahlin-Kottulinsky took three victories and a total of seven podium finishes. They secured the second championship title for RXR in 2023. The fourth season of Extreme E marked the end of Alejandro Agag’s racing series.

In February 2024, the season opener in Saudi Arabia went ahead as planned. Five months later, the race was held in Scotland. Further events had been planned in Sardinia (Italy) and Phoenix (USA), but were canceled altogether.

The Extreme E with electric drive from a battery will also not be continued. In the summer, a successor series was presented in the form of Extreme H. Although the vehicle is based on the Extreme E car, it is powered by hydrogen.

At the beginning of December, Prince Albert II drove this Pioneer 25 through the streets of Monaco. A race calendar for the 2025 season has not yet been presented by Extreme H. No teams have been presented either.

Nico Rosberg’s racing team will not be taking part. On December 27, it was confirmed that the team would not continue. In a statement, it said: “This decision follows Extreme E’s announcement earlier this year that it would end the final season early.”

“This news was initially a shock, particularly for RXR, who were looking to secure their third championship title. But with Extreme E now transitioning into the FIA Extreme H World Cup, it is an appropriate moment for RXR to close this chapter.”

He wishes the teams that will compete in Extreme H “all the best for the start of this new era of hydrogen-powered motorsport.” With that, Nico Rosberg, who was on site at many Extreme E events, is taking a temporary leave from racing.

“Building RXR was not just about racing, but also about creating a purpose-driven team that could truly make a difference,” says Germany’s last Formula 1 world champion.

“From our championship wins to our environmental and equality initiatives, we have achieved so much together. Although it is bittersweet to close this chapter, I am proud of what we have achieved.”

Lewis Hamilton’s X44 team had already ceased operations at the beginning of the year without giving a reason and did not participate in the 2024 season. Chip Ganassi, Carl Cox Motorsport and Abt Cupra had also withdrawn before the start of the season.
