Lionel Messi continues to make waves for Inter Miami. The 36-year-old scored his eighth goal in five games in a 4-0 win over FC Charlotte to lead his new club to the semi-finals of the Leagues Cup. There, Messi will now face a German who grew up in Ulm and Augsburg.
This time it was a rather lacklustre performance by Lionel Messi in his fifth outing for Inter Miami. When he and his new team took on Charlotte FC on Friday night, the Argentine didn’t play quite as furiously as he had in his first four appearances – but he did manage to score once again.
After setting up a 3-0 lead with the penultimate pass in the Leagues Cup quarter-finals, Messi scored his fourth goal of the night four minutes from time to send Miami into the last four. There, the Qatar world champions will face Philadelphia Union and Kai Wagner.
The 26-year-old left-back trained with SSV Ulm and FC Augsburg and later played for FC Schalke 04’s second team and Würzburger Kickers. Now Wagner will face the seven-time world footballer Messi next Tuesday – and possibly even as a direct opponent.
Mukhtar is also in the semi-finals with Nashville
Next to Wagner, a second German is in the semi-finals of the Leagues Cup in the person of Hany Mukhtar. Against Minnesota, the Nashville FC midfielder contributed a goal and three assists in a 5-0 win – now the Berlin native is also part of the preliminary round, which is getting more and more attention thanks to Messi.
