Netflix announces start date for sixth season of “Drive to Survive”

The new season of “Drive to Survie”, which takes a look behind the scenes of Formula 1 2023, will be released on Netflix before the season opener in Bahrain

Netflix has announced the release date for the sixth season of its Formula 1 documentary “Drive to Survive”. The new episodes of the popular series, which takes a look behind the scenes of the premier class and its 2023 season, will be released on February 23.

February 23 is the third and final day of winter testing in Bahrain. The season opener will take place a week later at the same location, which is why the Netflix documentary has been given a fairly early start date.

The first season, “Drive to Survive”, was released in 2019 and covered the 2018 season. It was the starting signal for a real Formula 1 boom and demonstrably led to increased interest in the racing series – especially in the USA.

The series continues to be produced by Box to Box Films. James Gay-Rees, producer of the Oscar-winning documentary Senna, remains at the helm as executive producer alongside Emmy award-winner Paul Martin, who is also behind the 2019 documentary Diego Maradona.

Although the 2023 season will not be as spectacular as in previous years, Gay-Rees believes the series still has plenty of scope to tell the stories of Formula 1.

“We all know the statistics about the changing, younger demographic and it’s difficult for any large organization to compete against the many options available to consumers,”,

“It’s a great satisfaction to gain such a large new audience for a sport – of course it was deserved, it just needed someone to open it up.”

“The fact that it wasn’t a fluke, the fact that it’s grown [with each season]…. It’s really an honor and we love it. It’s a very difficult series, but we love the process, we love the world. Long may it continue,” Gay-Rees said.

“Drive to Survive” involves all ten teams working together after initial resistance from Ferrari and Mercedes. The fifth season, which covers the 2022 season, has been praised by critics for toning down the show’s previous tendency to take fragments and quotes out of context for dramatic effect.
