Adrian Wojnarowski quits his job at ESPN and makes an unexpected change. His next challenge takes him back to his roots
NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski has announced his departure from ESPN to take on a new role as general manager of the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure University. Wojnarowski, a 1991 graduate of the university, shared his decision in an interview.
“It is a great honor to return to a university and a community that means so much to me,” Wojnarowski stated. “I look forward to serving the athletes and the entire program in my new role and opening doors for them both professionally and personally. “
Significant role in college basketball
“Woj,” who has been with ESPN since 2017 and previously worked at Yahoo Sports and The Record in New Jersey, will work closely with the basketball team and its winning coach Mark Schmidt in his new position. The general manager position is becoming increasingly important in college basketball, especially with regard to the transfer portal and managing Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) agreements.
St. Bonaventure athletic director Bob Beretta praised the decision, saying, “Woj is the ideal fit for this position. His deep ties to the university and his extensive network in the basketball world make him perfect for this role. It shows how much he cares about his alma mater that he is giving up a successful career in journalism to support us in this role. “
Farewell to ESPN
In a statement on his social media channels, Wojnarowski thanked ESPN and looked back on his long career in journalism: “The last seven years at ESPN have been a special privilege. But after all these years covering other teams, I’m excited to return to my own team.”
ESPN CEO Jimmy Pitaro recognized Wojnarowski’s contributions: “Adrian is an extraordinary talent and has led the industry at ESPN. We respect his decision and wish him all the best in his next chapter. “
The “Woj-Bomb”: Wojnarowski’s impact on NBA coverage
In recent years, “Woj” was considered one of the most influential voices when it came to NBA news. Hardly anyone was as close to the action as he was, and his reporting regularly caused a stir – especially when it came to transfers and trades. Whenever something significant happened in the NBA, it was often Wojnarowski who was one of the first to disseminate the information via social media.
His exclusive messages, which often appeared unexpectedly and without warning, gave rise to the term “Woj-Bomb”. This term is emblematic of the way in which his messages shook up the NBA world and caused exciting discussions
