After the legend, is before the legends. With this motto, 2K announced on Wednesday that Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi will be featured on the cover of the WNBA Edition
This follows the two superstars of their sport Michael Jordan, who was announced yesterday as the cover subject of the special editions of the upcoming series spin-off. However, the two WNBA legends do not have to hide from Jordan, who is often hailed as the best basketball player of all time.
Two record holders among themselves
Both players are among the best basketball players who have ever stood on the floor. Together, they have seven WNBA Championships, 23 All-Star nominations and have each won five Olympic medals.
In addition, the two icons are also undisputed record holders: Taurasi is still the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer, while Bird notched the most assists of all time.
“Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi have become basketball greats both individually and as a team, setting their status as two of the best players in WNBA history in stone,” aptly summed up Alfie Brody, Vice President of Global Marketing Strategy at 2K in the wake of the announcement.
Of her new role as cover hero, Taurasi expressed excitement. “It’s an indescribable feeling to see your hard work recognised on the cover of a game like NBA 2K23,” said the two-time WNBA Finals MVP, who was excited that anyone and everyone can now “dream of being on an NBA 2K cover, whether it’s in the NBA or WNBA.”
Collaboration for a good cause
In keeping with the pair’s commitment to equal opportunities for female basketball players, 2K joined the two superstars in donating $100,000 to Every Kid Sports as part of the second WNBA edition. The organisation gives young girls the opportunity to participate in basketball programmes across the US.
“It’s just great to be on the cover of a video game that has such a cultural impact,” Bird enthuses. “And by partnering with NBA 2K and Every Kid Sports, Diana and I are able to open the doors to youth basketball for hundreds of young girls across this country. “
