Acapulco – Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has defeated new world number one Daniil Medvedev of Russia to continue his winning streak in 2022.
In the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Acapulco, the 35-year-old Spaniard prevailed 6-3, 6-3 to also win the rematch of the Australian Open final. At the end of January, Nadal had won the Melbourne final in five hard-fought sets to claim his 21st Grand Slam title.
Nadal is still unbeaten in this tennis calendar year and could claim his third title in 2022 after the Australian Open and the ATP tournament in Melbourne. He will face Britain’s Cameron Norrie, who won his semi-final against Greece’s co-favourite Stefanos Tsitsipas, in the final on Saturday evening (local time). Medvedev, who lost in the semi-finals, will become the world number one for the first time despite his early exit. He replaces Serb Novak Djokovic.
