Munich title premiere for star coach Laso? Pressure from the family

Coaching legend Pablo Laso could win his first title with FC Bayern this weekend. The greatest pressure for the Spaniard ahead of the cup finals comes from home.

The tangible first basketball title abroad for Bayern Munich coach Pablo Laso also puts pressure on the successful Spanish coach at home. “You have to win the cup,” his family told him amusedly on Thursday. “I hope everything goes well.” The youngest of his three sons in particular, Aksel, who plays for Munich’s U19 team, is putting the pressure on his father to win his first title outside of Spain

Laso is a coaching legend. He has won titles like a conveyor belt in Spain, and his time at Real Madrid in particular was adorned with trophies. He has been in charge of FC Bayern since last summer.

He has won the trophy six times as a coach, number seven would be his first abroad. “All trophies have their own stories,” said Laso ahead of the first semi-final against Bamberg Baskets at home on Saturday (2 p.m.). Alba Berlin and champions ratiopharm Ulm will then contest the second clash (5.30 p.m.). The final will be played on Sunday (2 p.m.).

“You have to be ready from the very first minute,” Laso lectured. “The cup is so open, everyone has a chance to win.” For the sake of family peace alone, the title would be helpful for Laso this weekend. There is always “a family crisis when we lose”, said the star coach with amusement.
