Thomas Müller’s career with the German national team is apparently over. A corresponding media report took the DFB by surprise
After more than 14 years, Thomas Müller will apparently no longer be playing for the German national team. This was reported by Bild on Wednesday morning. The DFB were surprised by the news on Wednesday afternoon. The association has not yet been informed of a decision, nor has a corresponding statement been prepared.
The 34-year-old had already hinted shortly after the 2-1 defeat against Spain that it could have been his last game in DFB kit
Müller retires after 131 caps, leaving him behind only record international Lothar Matthäus (150) and record goalscorer Miroslav Klose (137) in the DFB’s all-time rankings. In his 9035 minutes with the eagle on his chest, the “Raumdeuter” scored 45 goals and set up 42.
His first international match was lost, as was his last: on March 3, 2010, as a 20-year-old in Munich in a friendly against Argentina (0:1), Müller was able to make much less of an impact than in the European Championship quarter-final against Spain, in which he made his second appearance of the tournament as a substitute and helped to force extra time and dominate for the most part.
Müller repeated his eight scorer points at the 2010 World Cup in 2014
Afterwards, like many others, he shed tears and declared that “realistically speaking” it could have been his last international match. Nevertheless, he emphasized – as he had after the 2022 World Cup – that he would never rule out playing for Germany: “There will be no such thing from me.” Playing for the national team meant too much to him.
Müller is one of the most successful to wear it. Just a few months after his debut, he became the third German after Gerd Müller in 1970 and Miroslav Klose in 2006 to win the “Golden Boot” as the tournament’s top scorer at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Müller also contributed five goals and three assists to the World Cup title in Brazil four years later, the greatest success of his DFB career, which had begun at U16 level.
