Last night was a frustrating night for Mo Salah. He was surrounded by PSG players all night, lost possession of the ball multiple times and had a crucial goal which would’ve put the game away for good disallowed. So, when he threw a water bottle following Firmino’s game-winner, everyone was quick to judge.

Roberto Firmino scores winning goal in a frustrating night for Mo Salah
Mohamed Salah had scored 29 goals in Liverpool’s last 29 games heading into last night’s Champions League clash with PSG, so expectations were understandably high. Liverpool took the lead through Daniel Sturridge and doubled it through James Milner after Bernat’s needless foul inside the penalty box. PSG didn’t threaten Liverpool’s goal but did equalize nonetheless thanks to a quick-thinking Thomas Meunier. Throughout the half, Salah was active, yet non-influential, as Tuchel’s tactic was specifically aimed at stopping him.
The Reds dominated even more in the second period. However, the Egyptian spent most of the night with his back turned against a goal, something we’ve rarely seen from him since he joined Liverpool. He eventually found the net, but the goal was disallowed for a Sadio Mane foul on PSG’s goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Salah and his teammates even celebrated because of the late whistle. Then, Mbappe scored on the visitor’s first shot on goal in the second half, shocking the entire stadium. Klopp reacted immediately by taking off Salah, who cut a frustrated figure while coming off the pitch.

Luckily for Liverpool fans, Roberto Firmino, who didn’t start because of an eye injury sustained over the weekend, took matters into his own hands and scored a terrific goal as time expired. The on-field cameras turned to Jurgen Klopp, who was celebrating in his own typical crazy way. However, they also caught Mohamed Salah throwing a water bottle in the background. Social media and pundits alike were left pondering his actions. After all, Salah is not the type of person who gets upset when others do what he couldn’t.
Salah throwing water bottle – an act of stress relief
Well, as it turns out, he did celebrate when Firmino scored. Throwing the bottle was just an act of frustration on a night nothing seemed to go right. It was more of a “Yes, finally!!!” type of reaction than “Oh no, my teammate scored and I didn’t”. It was a way of cursing without actually cursing. If Firmino wouldn’t have scored that late goal, Mohamed Salah would’ve taken the blame upon himself. That’s the responsibility he carries around these days – the same one Messi and Ronaldo have been carrying throughout their careers. Throwing the bottle was simply stress relief. That’s all.
