Many at Real Madrid are calling for a shake-up after the disappointing exit from the Champions League. A decision will soon be made on whether Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez will be allowed to stay.
Real Madrid has a strict policy. If a player is over 32 years old, his contract is only extended on a year-by-year basis. This has long been the case for Luka Modric (39) and now also Lucas Vazquez (33), whose contracts are due to expire.
According to Marca, the employment contracts always include a date by which the club must inform the players whether it intends to extend their contracts or not. The end of April or beginning of May is the reference point for sending a signal to the players.
However, there has been radio silence so far, so the departure of the two veterans is drawing nearer. However, the duo could still be involved in the Club World Cup: their contracts can be extended until the end of the tournament, which takes place from June 14 to July 13 in the USA.
Modric has already announced that he would like to continue at his beloved club. “I have already said that I want to end my career at Real. That would be a dream for me,” he said on Telefoot at the end of March. However, according to reports, a move to Qatar is also an option for the tireless Croatian. Modric is definitely keen to play in the 2026 World Cup. It would be the fifth in his career.
More titles for the record man?
Should the two leave Real, they can look forward to a royal send-off. With a total of 28 titles, Modric, who moved to Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, is the most successful player in Real’s history. The equally decorated Vazquez came up through the club’s youth ranks and is one of the few to have made the breakthrough. He has been wearing the white jersey since 2007.
Despite their exit from the Champions League, further titles are within reach for the duo. After all, Real can still win three titles this season: the league, the Spanish Cup – the final against FC Barcelona will be played on April 26 – and the Club World Cup.
