Mobile commitment expanded: Sony buys Savage Game Studios

PlayStation developer Sony wants to expand further into the mobile market. In the course of this, the Japanese electronics company announced the acquisition of Savage Game Studios.

The newly acquired developers will become part of Sony’s “PlayStation Studios Mobile Division”, explained Hermen Hulst, chairman of PlayStation Studios. With this new division, the company from the Far East wants to “reach new target groups that are not yet familiar with PlayStation and our games”, Hulst continued.

Focus remains on PlayStation

Of course, Sony’s priority is still its in-house hardware: “As we assured you with our plans to bring select titles to PC, our efforts beyond the console in no way diminish our commitment to the PlayStation community or our passion to continue developing great single-player experiences with a compelling story.”

Despite this, Sony appears to be making a sustained move into mobile gaming. A few weeks ago, the PlayStation Blog announced the release of a PlayStation controller for smartphones. For this, titles from Savage Games are now to follow: “Our newly created PlayStation Studios Mobile Division will operate independently of our console development and focus on innovative experiences for on-the-go based on new and existing PlayStation IP,” Hulst announced.

The PlayStation Studios chairman did not get more specific than that, but concluded by announcing that the newly acquired studio would already be working on “a new, unannounced, premium action game with live service for mobile devices. “
